The Top SEO Tips to Get Found on Google… you haven’t heard of… YET!
Assuming (as one should never do) you know a little about SEO, let’s do just a quick intro for those who are new to SEO but ready to learn!
SEO stands for SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION! Also known as… optimizing (making your content the BEST it can be) your content so YOU are found on Google or other search engines when someone searches for specific key words or phrases YOU are the perfect result for.
How can you get Google to show YOU as a result when someone searches for the thing YOU talk about? Optimizing your content aka SEO is how that’s going to happen!
Google needs to learn what your website is about, and when to show you as a result for relevant keywords.
Top SEO Tips – #1 Understanding Your Audiences Search Queries (what are they searching in Google)
Is your ideal audience searching for ‘spring festival outfit ideas’ or ‘classy spring dresses’… where does your content fit? Are they wanting ‘workouts for busy moms’ or ‘butt workout plans’ very different intentions!
Understanding exactly what your audience is searching for can help you learn what key phrases and key words to optimize your content for. Do some searches yourself and see what results show up! Which search phrase would YOU be the perfect result for?
Top SEO Tips – #2 doesn’t just happen inside your content… there’s so many more ways to optimize
Once you find a great constant keyword you want to rank for (show up as a result), you can begin to optimize your content for that keyword or phrase!
Let’s back up for a second before we go on…
I like to have a CONSTANT key phrase you rank for. This would be the literal ‘what you do’ or ‘your main niche’ of… in general… this is what I do.
For Brand Theory Studio, our CONSTANT key phrase is ‘branding and web design‘ it’s what we DO, the main service we offer, and what people would be searching for in order to find someone who does what we do.
Besides a CONSTANT key phrase, you can also rank for other key words and phrases depending on the content you’re creating. For example, if we wanted to write a blog post about Aesthetic Canva Fonts, we’d optimize the post for… you guessed it… ‘Aesthetic Canva Fonts’ NOT our constant key phrase ‘branding and web design’.
Once you know what key phrase your optimizing your website or blog post for, it’s time to get that key phrase everywhere you can!
Everywhere your keyword or key phrase should be…
- Within your content (used as much as you can, while still sounding natural)
- In the post or page URL
- Page titles
- Blog post titles
- Section Headings
- Image file names
- Page meta description
- Blog categories
- Image alt text & descriptions (where it makes sense)
Remember that every single instance of your keyword or key phrase helps Google to understand THAT is the topic and when someone is searching THAT keyword/phrase, is when your content is a perfect match to be shown!
Top SEO Tips – #3 Every Single Image on your site should be renamed with your key phrase and brand name (at least)
I mentioned it in the list above, but this is such a HUGE tip, that it needs to be it’s own stand alone secret! And, it’s something I see people skip out on the MOST! Why? Because it’s freaking TIME CONSUMING… but oh so worth it!
Think of how many images your website has (or will have if you’re just starting out). There’s background images, featured images, about page images, images inside blog posts, images are used on every single page to draw in the reader, keep them entertained and to visually break up the text! The problem with images?? Even if there’s text written on the image… Google CANNOT read that text, to them it’s JUST an image.
In order to get any SEO juice out of your images, you MUST start by renaming every single image file on your computer BEFORE you bring it into your website platform. What does that look like exactly? Super EASY!
What Should be included in your new image file name?
I like to include 3 things when renaming all of our images & for clients too! You can always add more or switch the order, but this is the minimum I’d suggest!
- What the photo is (this is super important for finding and utilizing images you already have later down the road) is it a photo of a specific dish for our food bloggers, a specific product name, what is the photo? Think of what the photo actually is, but also what would someone be searching specifically to find this item?
- Your brand name! If someone is searching Google for your brand name only, we want to make sure your website is what’s coming up, not anything else! Whether you’re a personal brand, or you have a business name, use what (again) people would be searching in Google to find you by name.
- Key Words and Phrases! Now we add in the major SEO! What key word or phrase are you focusing on for the specific page or blog post you’re working on? That’s going to be what you end the file name with!
For example from the re-named image shown above… we renamed this image, “canva-fonts-aesthetic-serif-fonts-brand-theory-studio-editorial-fonts-web-design-for-creators”
- “Canva Fonts Aesthetic” is the main key phrase we’re trying to rank for
- “Serif Fonts” is another option people could be searching in Google
- “Brand Theory Studio”… our brand name
- “Editorial fonts” is an additional key phrase option
- “web design for creators” is a very specific key phrase for our service and niche
Probably could have done less with this file rename, if I’m being honest! You don’t want so many key words that they’re fighting against each other. Although one post may be able to rank for many key words, it’s important to not go overboard, and (again) let Google figure out what the post is about with your help!
